What To Do On The Gili Islands
Visiting the Gili Islands was a huge highlight of my trip to Indonesia. Despite being a bit of a pain to get to (you can only get there by boat), it was well worth the hassle. Our boat arrived on the island during sunset – I loved how you could see the other islands and mountains in the distance whilst the sun was setting. Gili Trawangan itself is tiny, there are no cars or motorbikes on the island, which makes a nice change from the busyness in parts of Bali.
On our first day, we spent the day sailing between Gili T and Gili Air – this was one my favourite days of the whole trip. I felt really lucky to be in such a beautiful place - the water is a stunning turquoise colour and looks just as clear as it looks in pictures. I’m usually not a huge fan of open water, but I wasn’t nervous at all jumping into the sea here as it was so beautiful. The guys running the snorkelling trip were pretty funny, they would just stop the boat and shout, ‘swim!’.
Whilst we were snorkelling we saw lots of tropical fish and a turtle chilling on the rocks below us. After a couple of snorkelling stops, we stopped off at Gili Air for lunch and a spot of sunbathing. Gili Air had a relaxed, romantic feel to it. It’s a lot quieter than Gili T and is perfect for couples or families looking for somewhere a little calmer than the party island.
Back on Gili T, we strolled along the beach front, watching the sunset and looking for a nice restaurant. There are plenty of restaurants and beach bars - they all look stunning - you will be spoiled for choice. I recommend walking around to the infamous swing on Gili T to watch the sunset - it's a nice spot to kick back with a cocktail or Bintang and enjoy the view.
Things To Do On Gili T
Go snorkelling (there are plenty of companies along the beach front running trips)
Hire bikes and cycle around the island
Go for cocktails at a beach bar
Watch the sunset
Have a snack at the food market
Ask your hostel or hotel which bars are best to go to on particular days (see the board below from Gili Castle)
Take a speedboat to Gili Air or Lombok for the day and enjoy their beautiful beaches
